She was a medical guru and the alternate woman of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, one of India’s most important social liberals and father of the Indian Constitution.

Savita Ambedkar was born on January 27, 1909. This time is her 113th birthday. Savita failed on May 29, 2003, at the JJ Hospital in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. She was 94 times old at the time of her death.
Facts from Savita Ambedkar’s life
- Savita Ambedkar completed her early education in Pune and attained her MMBS degree from Grant Medical College, Mumbai in 1937.
- Her maiden name was Sharda Kabir, which she latterly changed. Her father was a register of the Indian Medical Council.
- After compactly working as a principal medical officer at a sanitarium in Gujarat, she came to Mumbai where she met Ambedkar, who was suffering from diabetes and blood pressure at the time.
- The two changed around 40- 50 letters for a time after that.
- The two married on April 15, 1948, in New Delhi, 13 times after the death of Ambedkar’s first woman ,Ramabai.
- She also wrote a memorable and autobiographical Marathi book named ‘ DrAmberdkaranchyaSahwasat ’. Several books have been written on Savita Ambedkar as well.

Who Is Savita Ambedkar?
Savita Ambedkar was born in 1909 in quondam Bombay in a Marathi Brahmin ménage in the Ratnagiri quarter. Her birth name was Sharada Kabir she took the name Savita Ambedkar after her marriage to Dr Ambedkar.
Savita Ambedkar gained her early education in Pune. After that, around 1937 she did MBBS from Grant Medical College, Mumbai. After completing her degree she started working as a first-class medical officer in a sanitarium in Gujarat still she quit the job and returned to Mumbai due to her health. Savita had eight siblings six of them had inter-caste marriages, an extraordinary thing for any Marathi Brahmin in those days. Savita said, “ Our family didn’t oppose inter-caste marriages, because the whole family was educated and progressive. ”
In 1947, during the time Dr Ambedkar was drafting the Indian Constitution he had some health issues. Dr Ambedkar had diabetes and high blood pressure and he couldn’t sleep. He was having neuropathic pain and went to Mumbai for treatment. This is where he first met Dr Sharada Kabir and ultimately they came closer.
